Play
The game is played on a rectangular court divided into two halves by a center line. Each team has one player designated as the point guard, who is responsible for initiating the offense. The other players are called the shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center. The object of the game is to score points by shooting a ball through a hoop 10 feet (3.05 m) high mounted to a backboard at each end of the court. Each team has two periods of possession, called "downs." During a down, a team can only move the ball forward by passing it. If a team loses possession of the ball, the other team gets a possession. The game is played in four quarters of 10 minutes each. The team that scores the most points at the end of the game wins.
