"Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl" is a 2003 American epic historical fantasy swashbuckler film directed by Gore Verbinski. The film stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Geoffrey Rush, and Jack Davenport. It is the first installment in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" film series. The film follows Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) and Will Turner (Bloom) as they search for the Black Pearl, a cursed pirate ship captained by the undead Captain Barbossa (Rush). The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $654 million worldwide against a production budget of $140 million. It received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Visual Effects, and won the award for Best Makeup. The film's success led to three sequels: "Dead Man's Chest" (2006), "At World's End" (2007), and "On Stranger Tides" (2011). A fifth film, "Dead Men Tell No Tales", was released in 2017.
