Penalty Shootout When a soccer match is tied after regulation and extra time, the winner is decided by a series of penalty kicks. Each team takes five shots from the penalty spot, and the team that scores the most goals wins. If the score is still tied after five kicks, the teams continue taking shots until one team scores and the other does not. To take a penalty kick, the player stands 12 yards from the goal and must kick the ball before it crosses the penalty line. The goalkeeper is allowed to move anywhere inside the goal area, but cannot touch the ball until it has been kicked. If the goalkeeper saves the shot, the ball is returned to the center of the field and the other team takes a shot. If the shot goes in, the team scores a goal and the other team takes its next kick. The penalty shootout is a tense and exciting way to decide a soccer match. It is often a matter of luck as much as skill, but the team that can stay calm and focused under pressure is usually the one that comes out on top.
