Blood caked under my fingernails, mirroring the crimson splatter across the walls. Years of this. Years of endless waves pounding against the barricades, their moans a constant dirge to the lost world. My comrades, one by one, swallowed by the ravenous tide. Now, silence echoed through the shattered windows, a silence so heavy it felt like a predator waiting to pounce. But silence wasn't the enemy. The enemy was scratching at the reinforced door, a chorus of rasping breaths and guttural groans. They weren't the shuffling, mindless hordes of legend. These were evolved, their eyes glinting with a cold cunning. One shot wouldn't put them down. It would take precision, strategy, every ounce of fury that still smoldered within me. Dawn wouldn't save me. Dawn would just paint the carnage in brighter hues. This was my Alamo, my Thermopylae. But unlike those ancient warriors, I wasn't facing men. I was facing a tide of death, driven by an insatiable hunger. So, I chose defiance. I chose to be the thorn in their throat, the grain of sand in their gears. I loaded my shotgun, the metal a comforting weight in my hands. Grenades nestled into my belt, each a miniature sun waiting to rise. Every bullet, every blast, would be a defiant shout against the encroaching darkness. If this was to be my end, it wouldn't be whimpering in a corner. It would be a blaze of glory, a final symphony of lead and fire. The door shuddered, splintering under the relentless assault. I grinned, a grim smile stained with sweat and soot. Let the show begin. This wasn't about hope. Hope had died with the others. This was about carving my name into the dying breath of the world, a defiant spark against the encroaching oblivion. The dead may have won the war, but they wouldn't win this final battle. Not without a fight. And fight I would. Until the last round chambered, until the last grenade detonated, until my lungs filled with smoke instead of air. I would fight for every inch, for every fleeting echo of humanity in this shattered world. They might take my life, but they would never break my spirit. The door splintered open. I met their gaze, unflinching. The symphony began.
