'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads; And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled down for a long winter's nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon shone bright on the new-fallen snow, Making it glitter and sparkle like diamonds. Out on the lawn stood a jolly old man, In a long white beard and a red velvet suit. He had a sack full of toys in his hand, And he was singing a jolly Christmas song. He looked up at me and smiled, And I knew it was Santa Claus. He climbed up the chimney with his sack full of toys, And soon he was in the house. He went from room to room, Delivering presents to all the good children. He filled the stockings that were hung by the chimney, And he left a gift for everyone in the house. Then he climbed back down the chimney, And he was gone. I went back to bed, And I fell asleep dreaming of all the wonderful presents I had gotten. The next morning I woke up, And I ran downstairs to see all the presents under the tree. I had gotten so many presents, I didn't know what to do first. I opened all my presents, And I found all sorts of wonderful things. I had gotten a new bike, a new toy car, and a new video game. I was so happy, I couldn't stop smiling. I thanked Santa for all the wonderful presents, And I promised to be a good boy all year long. I knew that I would never forget this Christmas, As long as I lived. Additional explanation:
